Germany’s Stevens Bikes were among the first to embrace disc brakes for cyclo-cross after the UCI lifted their ban in June 2010, with a prototype disc-specific monocoque carbon fibre frame and fork designed for their professional riders to use during the 2010/2011 race season.
The brand are steeped in cyclo-cross, with 25 German titles among their palmarès, which are also sprinkled with multiple World Cup and World Championship victories. Some of the sport’s biggest names ride for Stevens – Albert, Vos and Kupfernagel – and it’s been the racers who’ve expressed interest and driven the development of their disc-equipped carbon ‘cross bikes.
BikeRadar’s editor-in-chief, John Stevenson, caught up with Stevens’ brand and marketing manager, Volker Dohrmann, on the Eurobike show floor for a rundown of their second generation prototype disc bike. The new machine comes complete with internal cable routing for both mechanical and Shimano electric components, and sports an integrated seatmast.
Along with the new crosser, Stevens were proud to show their new 790g-road frame, which they built into a 4.8kg complete bike with off-the-shelf, albeit expensive, components for their Eurobike display.
