Hookless rims are becoming ever-more popular, with manufacturers claiming benefits such as lower weight, improved aerodynamics and reduced manufacturing costs.

However, controversy struck last week when Thomas De Gendt suffered a high-speed crash on stage five of the 2024 UAE Tour while – seemingly – just riding along.

Attention initially focused on De Gendt's hookless Zipp 353 NSW carbon wheels, although Vittoria, the team's tyre supplier, has since released a statement seeking to clarify the cause of the incident.

In this episode of the BikeRadar Podcast, deputy editor Jack Luke, and senior technical writer Simon von Bromley, discuss the incident and what it might mean for the future of wheel and tyre tech on road bikes.
