Amazingly lightweight, compact rechargeable front light

GUEE is a new bike light brand that’s making claims of impressive brightness, given its products’ sizes and pricepoints. BikeRadar tested the Sol 200 – a super-compact, USB-rechargeable front light based around a single Cree LED. At just 58g including the bar mount, this is one light light!

The Sol has a claimed output of 200 lumens, but when we compared it to a proven 250-lumen light, we found it lacking – and by a fair margin. It does still pack enough punch for a safe commute, though. A nice touch is the small ring of light that’s seen on the side of the light, allowing for side visibility.

Short of the claimed three hours’ battery life, we got two hours and 20 minutes on full blast from our sample before it switched off. There’s an in-built warning light to pre-empt the auto switch-off, but we didn’t find this particularly clear.

Mounting the Sol was simple with the provided flexible rubber bracket. The light sits on a ball socket, with a tightening ring allowing for simple and infinite angle adjustment. Charging involves removing the back and plugging in the supplied micro-USB cable. The light runs with very little heat, causing no dramas for the simple plastic construction.

Built into the back of the light is a rather gimmicky digital clock. With no backlit function, this is useless in low light. For AU$59.95 (UK price TBC), we’d recommend the soon-to-be-available version without the clock, which should be lighter again.
