Comfortable and a great performer — if you can stomach the price

The Waffler was a popular choice during testing thanks to the wondrous ability of merino wool to evaporate moisture, smells and any bad feeling about the day.

The cut is on the slim side, as you’d expect for a mid-layer, but it isn’t styled like a jersey so it’s ideal to segue easily from the bike to the pub.

The collar’s lined with a hard-wearing knit fabric and cuff seams include thumb loops for post-ride slouching; they’re less useful under gloves thanks to the bulk but if you habitually force your bike kit into multitasking then you’ll appreciate them.

The honeycomb texture does a fantastic job of trapping air – ordinary merino is toasty enough but the additional insulation factor here boosts warmth.

A dropped tail keeps your lower back happy and, despite deliberate abuse with biological detergent and the hot wash, it still came out looking like new.
