Our review
Warm, weatherproof and very grippy in the mud

The nylon chassis of the Northwave Hammer CX shoes is filled with fibreglass and topped with a Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) shell that also forms the cyclocross-specific grip on the sole.

The PU uppers have an almost seamless construction over a neoprene sock. Our size 44s weighed 801g with studs.

The neoprene sock fits closely at the ankle and they’re warm and comfortable when it’s cold and wet. The middle of the three velcro straps is offset to avoid pressure, and the small vents are high up to reduce water ingress.

The velcro straps give a wide range of adjustment, and the neoprene sock keeps most of the muck out, though you’ll still get wet feet. Security is excellent, with no foot slippage, and the sole is stiff enough on the bike for sprints, with a tiny amount of flex for when you’re running.

To improve mud clearance and engagement, the sole knobs are outside the pontoons on each side of the cleat. Limited knobs at the heel are ideal for running, with a textured rubber midsole for pedal grip. Supplied 15mm steel spikes give fantastic bite when you're running in the soft stuff.
