German mountain sports manufacturer Vaude strives to make its products as sustainable as possible. Its Moab AM shoe is no exception with a lining, laces and insole made with recycled materials.
The Moab Vibram’s sole is made from two different rubber compounds — more compliant sections at the toe and heel and a harder section at the pedalling area.
This mid-section is stiff enough to provide good pedalling support, while the toe and heel are treaded to give you reasonable walking grip when off the bike.
Unfortunately, the shoes only give average levels of pedal grip — the mid-section is just too tough for pedal pins to properly bite into. Feel from this area is pretty wooden too, though there’s just enough give to allow you to roughly locate your foot’s pedal position.
The Moab’s overall fit is good and you get decent arch support from the Ortholite insoles. And while the uppers are stiff, they were still comfortable enough to ride in all day.
While not waterproof, the Moab’s the hydrophobic outers shrug off a fair bit of water and grime. The canvas toe area is pretty impressive as it gives great ventilation while also keeping splashes and spray at bay.
