Our review
Heavyweight but not bulky boot with great adjustability

These shoes feature Lake’s unvented fibreglass-injected nylon sole with non-replaceable heel and toe bumpers and a three-bolt fixing. The sturdy uppers consist of waxed canvas partly covered with supple leather and carbon weave-patterned microfibre. The Boa IP1 dials tighten across the foot and ankle in four places. Our size 45 wide pair weighed 982g.

The Boa laces do allow the ankle to open quite wide, but if you find access too limited, the laces can be released from their guides. Inside is a sculpted and supportive footbed covered with soft insulating fibres that feels very cosy. There’s an extensive range of normal and wide sizes for men and women.

With the Boa laces tightening evenly, all-over retention and adjustability is excellent. The Boa dials are simple to operate on the move too, and there was no noticeable flex from the stiff sole even when sprinting.

Lake’s ankle closure is very slim and unobtrusive, leaving the merest of gaps around the leg, and although water can run down your leg, the ankle-height waterproof membrane and thick overlapping waxed canvas means the shoes remain impervious. They’re fantastically warm, and 12 large reflective patches give all-round visibility.
