Brilliant fit and performance – as you’d expect at this price

First off, if yellow just isn’t you, Mavic’s Huez shoes also come in white. They’re based on their top-of-the-range Zxellium Ultimate (£296.99), but they’ve been on a diet. At 210g (UK size 10.5) they’re among the lightest road shoes available.

Replacing the ratchet style retention system with three Velcro straps accounts for most of the saving, while the sole is carbon with lightweight titanium inserts for the cleat fittings. You might never have considered lightweight shoes a necessity, but the Mavics will give anyone more spring in their (pedal) step, especially at the end of a long ride.

And the weight saving isn’t at the expense of stiffness or support. The carbon sole is more than stiff enough, while the upper’s heel cup stops your foot rolling side to side. The Velcro closures may seem a bit simple compared to ratchets, but we found them easier to use and quicker to adjust. The upper is quite shallow compared with brands like Time. They’re available in half sizes from 4.5 up to 12.
